Get Your Smile Back with Dental Implants
Dental implants are one of the most popular ways to restore a lost tooth. Accidents, cavities and sports injuries are a few of the ways a natural tooth might be lost or extracted. With advancements in dentistry such as dental implants, patients no longer have to adjust to having a hole in their smile for a lifetime.
Dental implants offer a permanent tooth restoration to give your mouth its previous stability. Even if you are already wearing removable dentures, dental implants can help you maintain a healthy, stable, and durable smile.
How dental implants work
Implants substitute the old tooth root with small titanium posts that fuse with the jawbone. When a tooth is lost, the jaw bone gradually deteriorates due to lack of stimulation, reducing your ability to chew and disfiguring your face and smile. The oral surgeon will insert the implant into your jawbone to serve as the foundation for what will be the new dental crown.
After the surgical insertion, there will be a waiting period during which the implant will fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. After that — usually, three to six months — the implant will be ready for the new prosthetic tooth. Although dental implants are often used for single tooth replacement, they can also be used to restore complete tooth loss.
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), implant placement takes three necessary steps:
- Surgical insertion of the implant by a qualified dental expert
- The healing period of osseointegration
- Attachment of the prosthetic tooth or teeth
In most situation, the bone must have fully healed around the implant before placing the implant. However, in rare cases, the dentist may decide to load the implant with a prosthetic immediately after surgery. If additional healing time is required, the dentist will create a temporary tooth until the implant is ready for the permanent dental crown.
Are you a candidate for dental implants?
Dental implants have been in use for decades with a high success rate when the procedure is carried out by a professional and all dental hygiene rules are followed. Most patients are suitable for dental implants, but first, the dentist will consider your medical history and the condition of your oral cavity.
Patients suffering from chronic conditions such as leukemia and diabetes are not eligible for dental implants because these diseases limit the body’s healing ability. Patients who have undergone chemotherapy and received bisphosphonates or bone-building drugs such as Boniva and Fosamax are also appropriately screened. Frequent smokers with poor oral health may need to undergo a smoking cessation program before getting implants.
The dental screening usually involves the health and mass of the jawbone, and the number of implants required to restore your smile.
Proper oral habits are necessary for the success of dental implants. You need to floss and brush regularly to prevent infections and keep your smile looking attractive. If you have a missing tooth and you wish to get your smile’s appeal back, talk to your dentist about getting dental implants.
